Brief history - No 22935, 1st NZEF.
Extract from a local rag upon his death:
- TIMARU (Special) - Jim ("Cal") Callahan. One of the character
of the
Washdyke racing and trotting fraternity died on Sunday night.
"I've had more fund than Ned Kelly" was how he described his life with
a twinkle in his eye. But
the fun was associated with a good measure of hard work. Most it was among
horses and a stint
with the overseas forces during World War I.
Born at Catlins River. South Otago. Cal attracted attention at an early age for
his fearless riding
of horses and ponies. He served his apprenticeship as as jockey with Alex MeIvor
the Riverton trainer.
He rode over country and in flat races and schooled many horses with the
Birchwood hounds.
One of the best horses he had a part in educationg was Uncle Bob, a good jumper
trained at
Wairio by George Bain. father of Mr J.Bain.
Cal was studmaster a the Grange in Timaru, owned by Donald Grant and later with
his brother
Andrew Grant and his Allandale stud at Fairlie....... He was on his way to see a
foaling mare
when he collapsed and died at mid night. The mare gave birth to a healthy colt.
