Brief History:
Jeremiah Callaghan was
born in County Cork, Ireland on the 1st January 1835. He arrived in
Dunedin, New Zealand on the "City of Hobart" from Melbourne in 1861.
He died in 1907 after spending 4 months in the "Sisters of Mercy"
Hospice, Dunedin. His death certificate states that he died of cancer of the jaw
possible from Chewing tobacco.
Married by Reverend Riemenschnider at a Maori church on Pa site in the Otago
Peninsula. Rev. Riemenschnider was a Methodist
missionary who was associated with this church situatated on the Otakou Marae located
at 25. Tamatea Road, Otakou.
Jeremiah father was Michael Callaghan and his mother was Honora Callaghan
formerly Carolin (Carolan). His place of birth is given as County Cork and at
the time of his death he had two sons, John and Jeremiah (Aged 40 and 38) and a
daughter (Aged 36).
He is buried in the Southern Cemetery in Dunedin, his wife is nearby (Jemima). At the time of Jemima's death the children's where
aged 44, 41 and 39.
From 1867 to 1871 Jeremiah was a member of the Bruce and Tuapeka District
Electorate with his addressed recorded as Wetherstones. In 1873 to 1875 his
Electorate changed to the District of Waitaki with his address recorded as
Kakanui. Kakanui is 10km south of Oamaru. The provincial government ceased in
1876.
This photo
was taken at that time by Nell of her Grandfather - John William while he was visiting his
old homestead by the Catlins lake in 1939. The original homestead is 4km
from Owaka on the edge of the lake - These photos were taken in 2004, the
original home no longer exists -
