Brief History-My memories...Patricia
During the 1940s Aunt Nell Murphy stayed with us in Wellington. Later she worked as a housekeeper in one of the large hotels.
Uncle Fred Callahan also stayed with us he worked on the new motorway into Wellington. He lost his first wife in childbirth. He then married Edna.Later he was at the shingle works in Halcombe.
I remember Grandad John Callahan visiting us about 1939 or 1940.
Auntie Bessie was a regular visitor, and also her son Fred Bradfield.
Edna Tutenberg stayed also when she was at Teachers Training College.
There always seemed to be someone visiting in the 1940s.
Cousins who had enlisted to go to the war. Jack Callahan also visited.
My brothers Frederick and Norman served overseas. Norm in Italy and Commonweath forces in Japan. Fred was a Warrant Officer 2 in The third division which served in the Islands. Alexander (Snow) Commonwealth forces Japan . Later joining the Navy. My dad Sholto Douglas was in charge of one of the cookhouses at Trentham during WW2. He served in France and Belguim WW1.
